Analysis on Obstacle Gait in Early Parkinson¡¯s Patients - Preliminary Study -
Kim Chang-Hwan

Abstract
Objective: To examine the spatio-temporal character of obstacle gait among early Parkinsondisease (PD) patients.

Method: A total of 14 subjects; 7 PD patients (H & Y stage 1-2) and 7 healthy subjects were recruited. Normal and obstacle gait was evaluated with GAITRite? System. Subjects were also evaluated with the aim of assessing the temporal and spatial gait parameters.

Results: The purpose of this fall-prevention preliminary study was to examine the spatiotemporal character of obstacle gait among early Parkinson-disease (PD) patients using the GAITRite? system. In both normal gait and obstacle gait, the cycle time of the PD patients increased compared to the control group. The PD patients showed a decrease in double support period in normal gait and obstacle gait and revealed a statistically different figure. Swing phase also decreased, swing phase had a lower proportion on the experimental group, stride length in PD patients were significantly lower and the PD patients showed a difference in left/ right step length compared to the non-PD patients.

Conclusion: The obstacle gait analysis done on patients in H & Y stage 1-2 had abnormalities and this study would be applied to prevent falls and improve the imbalance in both left and right gait of PD patients. Therefore, the analysis done above on various-stages of PD patients could be used as a guideline for rehabilitation exercise program development to prevent fall of PD
patients.
